Week 5 had a little hiccup with Tuesday's treat of flooding, but thank goodness we made it through ok! This is the last week for our first grading period, do your best to be present! Math - We compared decimals to money and fractions! This is new, so it took the kids alot of practice to get it! For instance, 0.23 is $0.23 and is also 23/100! This Week: We'll continue to practice the new skills from last week, and progress to comparing and ordering decimals. As the week progresses we'll take a quiz and move on to problem solving with addition and subtraction (word problems). What can we talk about or work on at home? I've noticed kids having a difficult time remembering how to subtract across zeros - if you notice your child missing/correcting those on the weekly Builders please take the time to practice at home! As always, keep studying those facts! Science - We compared the molecules in solids, liquids and gasses, investigated creating a model that showed all 3 states, and even figured out what made popcorn "pop" (liquid inside heats, turns to steam, then the kernel expands and finally EXPLODES!)
This Week: We'll continue to talk about the states of matter, and investigate mixtures and solutions. What can we talk about or work on at home? Our 1st unit assessment is Tuesday, 9/28. The study guide will be sent home this week to help with key points and vocabulary!

Week 4 is in the books! Another prosperous week full of fun and learning! Math - We dove into decimals! Kids were working hard to learn to read them correctly, and name the places following the decimal (tenths and hundredths) This Week: We'll continue to practice the new skills from last week, and progress to comparing and adding/subtracting decimals. What can we talk about or work on at home? Our Skill Builders that we complete every Tues/Thurs and Friday are getting a little more challenging. As practice and graded papers come home take the time to go over missed questions and talk about the mistakes/misunderstandings. As always, keep studying those facts! Science - We investigated temperature and magnetism with hand's on activities, took our vocabulary quiz, and ended the week by challenging ourselves to create tin foil boats that could hold at least 25 grams! Some held over a hundred before they sank! This Week: We will focus on the states of matter, solid, liquid and gas. We will investigate the properties, compare them to each other, and talk about how the molecules are composed in each state. What can we talk about or work on at home? Identify solids, liquids and gases around the house! Slideshow below features our magnetism lab (both classes) and Jackson homeroom working on math fluency with games and activities. Also included is a giant Lego tower and really cool marble maze creation from our MakerSpace time! Welcome back to the Blog! We had a great week and I hope everyone has enjoyed the added day off this weekend! In class we talk alot about logic, strategy and problem solving. Not only do those attributes help at school, but they help us all with real world situations and life in general! Play games with your kids like cards, dominoes, checkers or anything! Teach them strategy, and maybe even let them win every once in a while ☺ Puzzles are good too, for the ultimate challenge have them put it together upside down! Math - We moved on from place value of whole numbers to decimals! This Week: We'll make models of decimals and compare them to fractions (2/10 = 0.10 23/100 = 0.23) We will practice saying decimals, writing them, comparing them and lead into adding and subtracting them. What can we talk about or work on at home? Keep studying those facts! We focus on fluency on Fridays so they have the week to review. Completed tests go home the following Monday so that you know if they have advanced to the next fact or need to practice on specific facts. As always review all work sent home. Science - Our main objective is to investigate and measure the physical properties of matter using our senses, mass, volume, density, temperature and magnetism. We focused on Volume one day and learned how to read a graduated cylinder. We investigated Density with a "sink or float" lab, and during another lab we explored the physical properties of "Oobleck" by measuring out the ingredients then getting thoroughly sticky! This Week: We will focus on mass, temperature and magnetism. What can we talk about or work on at home? The vocabulary study guide went home last week. That quiz will be Thursday. I have included a copy of the study guide at the end of this post in case the original has been lost! Enjoy a trip to the science lab by scrolling through the pictures below. Welcome to "The Blog!" This is a space I reserve for you, the parents, to be informed of our daily activities, weekly goals, and items of importance! I usually post on Sundays. Enjoy the updates and make sure to talk with your kiddos about what we are doing at school, share pictures, and enjoy being as apart of the class as I can get you! Sometimes I get more pictures of one class than the other, but I try to make it as equal as possible! Math - We've been reviewing basics from 3rd grade; addition, subtraction, single digit multiplication and getting in depth in place value. We are practicing reading, writing and saying numbers to the billions place! Friday we took out 1st fact test over 0s and 1s. The students' goal is to "Beat their Best", so they will not only get prizes for going on to the next test, but also for getting more problems correct each week than the previous week. As they progress the fact tests review previous facts. For instance, fact test #4 not only has x4, but also x3, x2 and x1! The ultimate goal is for all kids to have their facts memorized by the end of the year! Next Week: We will work more on big numbers, then start with decimals. In fourth grade students will need to be able to read, write, compare and work problems with decimals to the "hundredths" place. (We compare to money alot!) What can we talk about or work on at home? Practice math facts and review all work sent home. Look for decimals! Science: The past few week we have focused on Lab Safety and Lab Tools, with a few trips to the science lab to explore! Next Week: We'll start learning about the physical properties of Matter (mass, volume, density...) The vocabulary study guide will be sent home Wednesday with the quiz coming the following Wednesday, 9/1. What can we work on at home? Go over the vocabulary words when the study guide comes home on Wednesday and ask your kids what they did at school☺ *Enjoy the following media highlights of the last two weeks, including "getting to know you", Science Lab, Math games and Makerspace! Week 2 Looks like we're in this for the long haul :(
We were hoping to be able to go "back to normal" before school was out, but evidently that's not the case. As we progress with the flexible learning plan, I'll send updates and ideas to aid in ours studies and projects! To start off though, I have some great online resources and reminders for science that the kids will learn from and enjoy! If you have access to online resources these are excellent enhancements to our current science "Choice Board" activities! 1. "Science Max" episodes on You Tube! They are engaging, funny, and full of great experiments that are maxed out! 2. Did you know that Netflix has all new episodes of "The Magic School Bus Rides Again"? If you already have a subscription this is an excellent series of new episodes that most kids haven't already watched! (The older series, The Magic School Bus, is also on You Tube) 3. The Science Symbaloo on Our Class Website has many fun links to sites such as National Geographic, EdHeads, Study Jams and many more fun and science based game sites! Saving the best for last, if you are able to get online then go to Education Galaxy, click Education Galaxy (not Lift Off). Click "My Study Plan", "Science", then scroll the the last section! These are the concepts we have not covered in depth this year and would be an excellent way to review and be ready for 5th grade! Watch the mini-lesson 1st! They are a little slow but do a great job covering the big ideas! If you need a good introduction or review for line symmetry please watch the following videos!
Just click on the title to go to the link! NumberRock Symmetry Symmetrical Shapes Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Figures I hope you enjoyed our math update! I forgot to mention science! Most of you have completed the chapter, but since we have an extra 4 days added to our at-home learning I will be sending some projects choices for students to complete that will wrap up the unit!
Thank you you for being my partner in teaching♥ CORE MATH: This week the goal is to complete lesson 13.3, Parallel and Perpendicular Lines and lesson 13.4, Classifying Quadrilaterals!
Lesson 13.3 study aides: NumberRocks has an awesome song the illustrates the difference in the lines, (click here for link) This short video shows real-world examples (click here for link) Our textbook has excellent pictures and definitions on page 461! Lesson 13.4 study aides: NumberRocks has an awesome song the illustrates the difference in the shapes, (click here for link) This is a fun video that teaches about the differences in quadrilaterals! The host are funny and the information is accurate. It would be great to watch before you do the lesson (click here for link) Our textbook has excellent pictures and definitions on page 467! Each lesson builds on the ones before it so it's really important to take your time and know the content! SCIENCE: Some of you have gone through the Moon Chapter pretty quickly. If you have, then take the time to explore something that your interested in or build (STEM) a cool creation out of things you have around the house! Challenge yourself to build something that does something and send me a picture or video! Keep working hard and contact me as you go so I can help! CORE MATH: By today, Friday, March 20th you should be completing math lessons 13.1 and 13.2! 13.1 was more of a review because we had already started the Unit, but 13.2, Classifying triangles is new! * This YouTube video from MrMathBlog (click here for link) is 13 minutes, but is a perfect review of the skills in 13.1, Lines, Rays, and Angles! The teacher who made it is even using our same textbook and follows along with the introduction pages! * MrMathBlog also has a video for Classifying Triangle 13.2 (click here for link). I wish I had found these ahead of time so that you could be watching them as you work through the introduction of the lessons! * Please review/wrap up this week's lessons by watching and following along in your "Math books." COMPLETED WORK: You can "turn in" the completed work by taking pictures or scanning it as you go and sending the completed pages to me via email ([email protected]), text (409-670-3898) or even Remind! I don't know how MVE plans on physically getting work to the school or giving out new work if flexible learning is extended. I hope and pray this ends April 3rd and kids can just return with completed work but I fear it will be longer. I will update regularly! EDUCATION GALAXY: Students in both classes are doing a great job getting onto Education Galaxy to practice all math skills! Both classes, combined, have answered 972 math questions since Tuesday morning, our 1st day of at-home learning! Our leaders in each class, with over 200 questions answered are Kaylie (Farwell) and Maverick (Jackson) Way to go! Looking at individual usage, over half of you have been active online for at least 20 minutes this week. Remember, you can go online using any device! TECHNOLOGY: I've set up a TEAMS site through your Microsoft 365 accounts with all students from both classes added. I'm watching tutorials online and playing with the site now to learn how to use it to help in instruction I will update you on our progress there when I figure out what I'm doing LOL! MAKING CONTACT: Lastly, please comment below that you have read the above with a thumbs up or "Hello!" I'll need to contact our classmates to update them via phone if I'm not sure they've read the math update! Thank you all for helping out in these challenging learning times!
